By participating in this CardioCore Foundational Lecture, you will better understand the pathophysiology, evidence, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia. You will also gain clarity on clinical criteria, genetic testing, and established and investigational lipid-lowering therapies for the management of familial hypercholesterolemia.
Lecturer
Ashish Sarraju, MD, is Associate Staff in Preventive Cardiology at the Miller Heart, Vascular, and Thoracic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Cleveland Ohio, and a researcher with the Cleveland Clinic Coordinating Center for Clinical Research (C5research). Dr. Sarraju trained at Stanford University as a resident and Chief Resident in internal medicine, where he stayed for fellowship and as Chief Fellow in Cardiovascular Medicine. He completed a postdoctoral research training funded by the American Heart Association focused on health tech and innovation. He received the Edwin Alderman award for Excellence in Clinical Research at Stanford.
At the Cleveland Clinic, he focuses on dyslipidemias and familial hypercholesterolemia as the Director for the Center for Inherited Lipid Disorders. His research focuses on clinical trials, along with AI and tech to address gaps in preventive cardiology. His original research has been published in leading journals such as the Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and JAMA. He serves in leadership positions for phase 1 through 4 randomized trials. He is a member of C5research, the academic research organization of the Cleveland Clinic. He serves as a peer reviewer for major journals, on several AHA grant review committees, and is a member of the AHA Epidemiology and Prevention Statistics committee and Board of Directors for the American Society for Preventive Cardiology.
He received a Top Educator award at the Cleveland Clinic in 2023.
Moderator
Harpreet S. Bhatia, MD, MAS, FASPC, is a cardiologist and epidemiologist with a clinical and research focus on the prevention of cardiovascular disease. As an assistant professor of medicine, he is involved in training medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is also the Associate Program Director for the Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship. His research interests include the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, especially related to lipids and lipoprotein(a), and the use and improvement of coronary artery calcium scoring. He receives grant support for his research from the National Institutes of Health, and his work has been published in leading academic journals, including Circulation, JACC, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, JAMA Cardiology, and EJPC.
Dr. Bhatia was chief fellow during his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also completed a master's degree in clinical research and a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology. He completed residency training in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Bhatia earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
