Professional Bio
Dr. Safarova is an Assistant Professor and a Consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her clinical and research interests include personalized cardiovascular prevention and heritable lipid disorders. She has authored more than 60 publications, including scientific statements and book chapters. She was a principal investigator for the first in-human proof-of-concept study of the causality of Lp(a) in patients with CAD and was involved in the development of the first nation-wide registry of patients with FH in Russia. At Mayo Clinic, she developed the first EHR-based phenotyping algorithm (which included natural language processing), to detect FH in the EHR. Her work on targeted sequencing to uncover shared genetic susceptibility between PAD and CAD received the AHA’s Jay D. Coffman Early Career Investigator Award. Her research on phenome-wide association study to discover pleiotropic effects of PCSK9 received the ACC Young Investigator Award. She has received research grants from the AHA, International Atherosclerosis Society, Pfizer, the MCW CTSI.
Dr. Safarova graduated with honors from the First Moscow State Medical University. Her PhD in Cardiology and Biochemistry was focused on Lp(a) and various treatment modalities for heritable lipid disorders, including lipoprotein apheresis, at the National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Medicine, Moscow. Her postdoctoral training was in genetic epidemiology of heritable lipid disorders and clinical informatics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She continued her clinical training in internal medicine at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School - Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and completed Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where she served as a chief fellow. She is a fellow of the NLA, ACC, and AHA. She is a board member of the Wisconsin-ACC Board of Councilors and the ISFA.
