Cardiometabolic Medicine Fellowship Overview
This 2-year fellowship, established and marshaled by ASPC, will support the creation of cardiometabolic training programs nationwide and increase the number of expert clinicians equipped to effectively manage patients with cardiometabolic risk factors.
INSTITUTION GRANT AWARD
The goal of this grant is to support the institution in developing the new program, as well as providing salary assistance for a single two-year fellowship. In addition to salary assistance, it will cover travel and publication costs for the Fellow-in-training.
INSTITUTION GRANT APPLICATION PROCESS
Academic centers will be asked to provide the following information in their application:
- Program contact information
- List of current Residencies and Fellowship programs
- Candidate recruitment plan
- Budget breakdown
- Letter of support from the Fellowship Director
- Letter of support from an affiliated physician champion with a practice focus in cardiometabolic health.
Applicants must be US-based institutions with existing ACGME-accredited programs and comply with the ACGME’s six core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
Program Director Requirements
The Program Director (PD) should be board certified in either Cardiology or Endocrinology and a recognized thought leader. The PD must actively practice in a clinical area involving cardiometabolic risk factors.
Candidate Selection Process
The institutions awarded fellowship grants will make the selections via their own processes, using their own criteria such as clinical excellence, academic potential, leadership ability, teaching skills, and demonstrated interest in cardiometabolic related care.
The ASPC recommends that diversity, equality, and inclusion be prioritized as part of the selection process at each institution.
The ASPC will interview and approve the institution’s selection.
REVIEW PROCESS & NOTIFICATION
Institutions will be selected by an ASPC Advisory Board based on their clinical and research expertise in relevant disciplines, their focus on cardiometabolic risk factors, and their ability to train well-rounded physicians. When reviewers have significant conflicts of interest, they will be recused from reviewing specific applications.
Selected institutions will be notified of grant awards by January 30, 2024, and will be required to sign a Grant Agreement with the ASPC.
