ASPC Board Member Wins Award at EuroPrevent 2017

ASPC Board Member Dr. Mahfouz El Shahawy won an award at the Congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EuroPrevent 2017) for having the best scientific original work in the major areas of preventive cardiology. Dr. El Shahawy received this prestigious honor at EuroPrevent 2017 held in early April in Malaga Spain. The award was presented to him by the president of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology along with the chair of the scientific sessions at a special ceremony held during the Congress. The recognition was the result of two presentation he made at EuroPrevent 2017 listed below.

  • Decades of obesity even without comorbidities in asymptomatic subjects is associated with significant cardiovascular structural and functional abnormalities
  • Epicardial adiposity, regardless of visceral adiposity, is associated with significant cardiovascular abnormalities in untreated and asymptomatic subjects, as measured by the calcium score

Dr. El Shahawy has been conducting this study for the last decade in Sarasota, FL. This research resulted in his novel scientific discovery and lead him to receive this honorable award. He hopes that this recognition will bring more attention to the ASPC's mission and encourage the importance of early cardiovascular disease prevention on an international level.

Dr. El Shahawy will be continuing his presentation on these topics at the University of Florida Cardiology Grand Rounds on May 11, 2017 in Gainesville, FL.
